HOW TO LOCK WINDOWS DESKTOP USE REGISTRY

For public computer, like office computer or home computer for the family. Sure Desktop Setting always change. To lock desktop setting of windows cannot be altered you can use registry, its way :

Lock Setting Active Desktop

• Open registry editor by Click Start-run then type regedit
• Navogate to registry key :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop

• Create a new DWORD Value and give the name NoActiveDesktopChanges
• Double click NoActiveDesktopChanges and fill value data with 1.

Specific Lock Desktop Setting

• Open the registry editor
• Go to :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop

• Create new DWORD Value give the name :

• NoChangingWallpaper - Disable the ability to change wallpapers.
• NoComponents - Disable components.
• NoAddingComponents - Disable the ability to add components.
• NoDeletingComponents - Disable the ability to delete components.
• NoEditingComponents - Disable the ability to edit components.
• NoCloseDragDropBands - Prevents adding, dragging, dropping and closing the Taskbar’s toolbars.
• NoMovingBands - retrict adjustments to desktop toolbars
• NoHTMLWallPaper - only allow bitmaps (BMP) as wallpaper

• Double click the new DWORD Value and fill value data with 1.

Blocking application to restrict it to execution. This is an useful trick I think to System Administrator or who have a PC that they want to protect their privacy.

Its way :

• Open your registry editor (Click Start-Run then type regedit), then find the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Software / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Policies / Explorer

• If you have found the key, add new DWORD Value and rename it to be DisallowRun.

• Double click the value and set data value to be 1.

• Create new key under Explorer key and rename it tobe DisallowRun, so the complete key will be like this:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Software / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Policies / Explorer / DisallowRun

• On DisallowRun key, create new String Value, and rename it to be (example: application1). Double click the value and set the data value by application that you want to block. (Example winamp.exe, cmd.exe, or regedit.exe) Read the rest of this entry »

When making a change windows registry sometime some functions of windows become error. To prevent mentioned you can create registry back-up before making a change registry.

Backup Registry

• Click Start > Run… the type regedit to open Registry Editor

• Backup youe windows registry by select File > Export… menu

• Export Registry File appear, save the registry as .reg file. Name for example as backup.reg. the click save.

Restore Registry

• To restore registry select File > Import… menu

• Select registry backup file the click open.
