About BOOT.INI File in Windows XP



Windows XP use a configuration file called BOOT.INI to control how the operating system is booted and any startup options. By modifying the startup switches you can manage the boot process including booting Windows in Safe mode, creating a log file, or disabling the splash screen. BOOT.INI file found on the root partition of your hard drive (normally C:\). You may need to enable “show hidden hidden files” Options and and uncheck “hide protected operating system files” in windows explorer to view this file.

To modify BOOT.INI file, Right-click on the file, then select open with, in notepad or wordpad. Other methode to open the file, by right click mycomputer – properties – advanced tab – startup and recovery setting – edit. Before modifying the file you may like to make a backup of the file at this point to allow you to restore if you experience problems. after opening the file under the [operating systems] section you will find a list of all the installed operating systems. For example:

To enable or disable startup options simply change or add any of the switches listed below to the default command-line. For example you could add “/SOS” to the command-line above to display the splash screen and view the drivers being loaded.

Tips Recent Document in Windows XP



A. Disable or Enable Recent Documents History

Normally when you open or access a document or file it is added to the list of recent documents on the Start Menu. This tweak will stop files from being added to the list.

  • Open your registry Editor and find the key below.
  • Go to registry key :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Software | Microsoft | Windows | CurrentVersion | Policies | Explorer

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | Software | Microsoft | Windows | CurrentVersion | Policies | Explorer

  • Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value called “NoRecentDocsHistory” set the value to equal ‘1′ to enable the restriction, to disable set the value to “0”.

B. Change the Number of Recent Documents Displayed

This setting is used to specify the number of documents and files that are kept in the recent documents section of the Start menu.

Tweak Windows XP for Better Performance

Disable Unneded Windows Service

Go to: control panel - administrative tools - services.

Select the extended tab at the bottom. Here you see the services that are running or not if they have been stopped already. So, which ones do we not need to have running all the time if at all. Windows XP tweaks aplenty.

  1. Alerter : Notifies selected users and computers of administrative alerts.
  2. Clipbook : Enables ClipBook Viewer to store information and share it with remote computers.
  3. Error Reporting Service : No we do not need that. Since when has Microsoft helped you. So high-light it and then double click it. Up come a panel with options. Half-way down is says “Start Up Type”. Click the drop-down button and select Disable and OK. That told it.
  4. Fast User Switching Compatibility : Are you basically the only person using the computer, if not, so what. Disable that as you did above.
  5. Help and Support : do you have never used this ?. disable.
  6. Indexing Service : What’s the point in Windows continually indexing your hard drive or drives for searches you never do. Disable.
  7. Network DDE & Network DDE DSDM : If you are not connected to a network or broadband using Ethernet this too can be Disabled.
  8. Portable Media Serial Number : Not using an MP3 player or iPod then disable.
  9. QoS RSVP : Stop Windows using your bandwidth. Disable will stop all that Windows traffic that you cannot believe is going on. This tweak, top can reclaim anything up to 25% of your bandwidth.
  10. Remote Registry : Do you want remote computers to alter your registry. Disable.
  11. Smart Card : If you do not use a Smart Card on your computer then you can disable this too.
  12. System Restore : What’s the point in Windows XP Pro continually every so many minutes taking a snap shot of your system. Disable.
  13. Themes : Since we have adjusted for performance lets disable this as well.
  14. Uninteruptible Power Supply : If you do not have one fitted to your PC computer then this can be disabled too. Who has.
  15. Wireless Zero Configuration : Do you use WiFi. No. Disable.
