Freelance Marketers Can Make Big Bucks

Freelance marketing has its perks. Most marketers work from home, choose their own hours and earn great money from an endless supply of projects from businesses wanting to expand their operations. But how do you get to that point?

Before you even get started, it’s important to know which kind of marketing you want to do. Don’t just brand yourself as a “freelance marketer” – companies want people with specific skills. Instead, tout yourself as someone with experience marketing “retail,” “eCommerce,” “financial services,” or “auto dealership” businesses. Then, when somebody searches for your services on Google, you’re much more likely to show up.

You also need to be clear with yourself about your strengths and weaknesses. The market for freelance professionals is extremely competitive. As a result, you’re only likely to succeed if you dispassionately evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. If you’re a poor writer but a great artist, don’t go down the content creation route. Stick with that you’re good at instead.

Okay. Now let’s move onto a step-by-step plan for how to make money as a freelance marketer.

Step 1: Get A Great Education

Before you’re able to do anything in the marketing world, you need to learn the basics. Fortunately, there are all kinds of integrated marketing graduate programs out there that cover the very latest in the discipline. Though you might think that you can learn all you need to know from blogs, nothing can replace the discipline and rigor of a professional academic environment. Plus, it helps if you have something formal you can put on your CV.

Step 2: Make Yourself Unforgettable

When you’re a freelance marketer, branding isn’t so much about creating a professional public persona – it’s more about making yourself unforgettable. One of the reasons that Fox News is so renowned isn’t because it went down an easy, middle-of-the-road route. The company was prepared to make both friends and enemies in its search for notoriety. As a freelance marketer, you’ve got to be prepared to do the same. Although you might not want to think of yourself as being like Marmite – love it or hate it – all you need is for some people to love you to have an incredibly successful online presence.

Step 3: Pitch With Freebies

Say, for instance, you spot a potential client that could potentially lead to a lot of work in the future. Instead of going up to them and demanding payment for the first job, offer to do it for free. Show them what you’re capable of, and if they want more, then they’ll have to pay for it. Few freelancers will ever adopt this tactic, but those that do can reap the rewards with some of the most lucrative contracts.

Step 4: Keep Evolving

Company demands change all the time. In fact, they change so often that it can be hard to keep up. But if you want to be a successful internet marketer, then you need to constantly update your skill set. That means listening to your customers, accepting criticism and regularly taking the time to bounce ideas off a sounding board.
