Tips Recent Document in Windows XP
A. Disable or Enable Recent Documents History
Normally when you open or access a document or file it is added to the list of recent documents on the Start Menu. This tweak will stop files from being added to the list.
- Open your registry Editor and find the key below.
- Go to registry key :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Software | Microsoft | Windows | CurrentVersion | Policies | Explorer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | Software | Microsoft | Windows | CurrentVersion | Policies | Explorer
- Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value called “NoRecentDocsHistory” set the value to equal ‘1’ to enable the restriction, to disable set the value to “0”.
B. Change the Number of Recent Documents Displayed
This setting is used to specify the number of documents and files that are kept in the recent documents section of the Start menu.
- Open your registry and find the key below.
- Navigate to registry key :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Software | Microsoft | Windows | CurrentVersion | Policies | Explorer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | Software | Microsoft | Windows | CurrentVersion | Policies | Explorer
- Create a new DWORD value called “MaxRecentDocs” and set it to equal the number of documents to display in the recent documents list, the default is 15.
C. Clear Recent Documents When Windows Exits
This restriction will clear the list of recent documents on the Start Menu when Windows exits.
- Open your registry and find the key below.
- Open Registry Key :

- Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value called “ClearRecentDocsOnExit” using the settings value (0 = disable, 1=enable).
D. Remove Recent Documents Folder from the Start Menu
This setting can be used to remove the recent Documents folder from the Start Menu.
- Open your registry and find the key below.
- Open Registry Key :

- Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called “NoRecentDocsMenu” set the value to equal ‘1’ to enable the restriction, to enable set the value to “0”.
After editing registry, you may need to restart for the changes to take effect.
