Changing Drive Icon with Your Own Icon

This tips will guide you to replace default Drive icon with your own Icon. If we want to change icon at Folder it easy, what need to be done only Right clikcing mouse at Folder, click customize and click change icon. For icon of Drive not easy as that, but it is not impossible. To change drive icon we can modifying the registry entry.

Description of Picture: Drive C, D, E and F using default Icon. Drive G have changed with other icon.

To modify your drive Icon follow this tutorial:

  1. Open registry editor (Click Start –Run then Type regedit)
  2. Open this registry key “HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Software | Classes”
  3. Create New-Key and give the name “Applications”
  4. Create Sub-Key in the “Applications” key and give the name “Explorer.exe”.
  5. Create Sub-key again and give the name “Drives”.
  6. Create Sub-Key and give the name like Drive letter. E.g. If you want changing icons at Drive G:\ create sub-key and give the name G. Confused, see the picture.

  7. Create subkey in “G” key and give the name “DefaultIcon”
  8. Last, modify default string value in right pane of “DefaultIcon key”, and fill the value data with your icon location. E.g you icon in the “D:\Myiconfolder\iconame.ico”. Typying “D:\Myiconfolder\iconame.ico” in value data of default string value.
  9. Now open your windows explorer, Your default Drive icon have replaced with New Icon.

Note: Its work on Windows XP and Windows Vista.
